Founded in 1967, SMCI was once part of one of the largest real estate organizations in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. SMCI (then Charles E. Smith Construction Services), was a wholly-owned subsidiary operation of Charles E. Smith Residential, mostly responsible for the construction needs of the Charles E. Smith commercial and residential portfolios.

In 1994, Charles E. Smith Construction Services was incorporated in the State of Maryland as Smith Management Construction, Inc. SMCI continued to provide construction services for Charles E. Smith's growing portfolio of properties; however, expanded its service base to tenant improvements and base building construction to owner's outside of the Charles E. Smith portfolio.

Charles E. Smith Residential Realty, Inc. and Archstone Communities merged in November 2001 to form Archstone-Smith - an owner, developer, acquirer and operator of apartments in protected locations in major metropolitan areas across the country with wholly-owned subsidiaries in construction, facilities management, mechanical and electrical engineering. Charles E. Smith Residential remained fully operational as the High-Rise Division of Archstone-Smith, and SMCI became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the new parent entity.

In February 2003, the five senior managers at Smith Management Construction, Inc . acquired the firm's stock and assets from Archstone-Smith. Because of the REIT structure of the new ownership entity, SMCI's various expanded services as a general contractor was an unusual fit with Archstone-Smith, whose core business is owning and managing apartments. Acquiring the firm allowed SMCI to better serve premier clients and make decisions that are more consistent with SMCI's corporate long-term goals and objectives, as a provider of specialized construction and related professional services.

Headquarted in McLean, VA, SMCI is now a locally-owned and operated construction firm with superior in-house talent, substantial financial backing, strong ties in the subcontractor community, and direct, relevant experience. SMCI conducts well over 2,500 annual construction tasks that consistently value over $100 million each year.
